Depending on how you define business, if you just survive, many match factories can’t even talk about it. If it is said to drive the development of China’s match industry, then Fangzhou Match Factory is working hard on the world match stage with this dream.
Matches have been endowed with many historical imprints in China, and these historical imprints are deeply imprinted in the hearts of every Chinese. The earliest invention of matches was invented by the Chinese in 577 AD during the Northern and Southern Dynasties. However, the safety match in the modern traditional sense (that is, the match that can be ignited by friction) was invented by the British 200 years ago. During the Anti-Japanese War, match factories such as Japan and Sweden lowered their prices and dumped matches in China, so that the match industry that we finally established during the period of the Republic of China was almost destroyed.
After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the national match industry has sprung up like mushrooms after a spring rain. By the end of the 20th century, there were hundreds of state-run large-scale (more than 1,000 people) match factories all over the country. But after the emergence of lighters, matches were gradually eliminated in China. State-run match factories went bankrupt one after another, but India, which also has 1.4 billion people, has a completely different path from China.
Today, there is only one large match factory (more than 100 people) left in Ark Gift Match Factory, Long’an District, Anyang City, Henan Province. The founder of Fangzhou Match Factory – Zhao Changxin, used to be in charge of papermaking technology in the state-owned match factory – Anyang Match Factory. At the turn of the century in 2000, Zhao Changxin sensed the crisis, so he took a dozen or so workers and started a different road of advertising matches.
Now Ark Match Factory continues the spirit and original intention of Anyang Match Factory (established in 1946) and competes with match factories in Japan, Sweden and India on the international stage. Adapting to the trend of the times, the average business and operation employees of Fangzhou Match Factory are “post-95s”, with an average age of about 25 years old.
